As a temporary fix, it is possible to disable the Buffer Overflow Protection within McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8. This, however, is not ideal as it lowers your security protection against viruses. (For experienced and advanced users, you could add Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player as exclusions under the Buffer overflow excusions options, specifying 'getprocaddress' for both - please refer to your VirusScan help documentation on how to do this)
To disable Buffer Overflow protection:
( 1 ) Right click the Mcafee VirusScan in your Windows system tray (looks like a red, white and blue shield). ( 2 ) Select Buffer Overflow Protection-Properties. ( 3 ) Remove the tick in 'Enable buffer overflow protection'.
Mcafee are aware of the problem and have advised that the next version of Enterprise VirusScan (version 9) does not have this problem. For further details of how to identify the problem, go to the mcafeehelp.com forums.
Note: if you believe this symptom applies to you even though you are only running the standard (not corporate) McAfee Anti-Virus edition, you can try disabling the buffer over-run protection. However, if this doesnt resolve the issue, please re-apply.
( 1 ) On the Advanced Menu, click Configure. ( 2 ) On the Configure pane, click Computer & Files. ( 3 ) Under Virus protection, click Advanced. ( 4 ) Select or clear the following check boxes. ( 5 ) Enable buffer overflow protection.
